Wtb Cheap: Pci Scsi Card For Mac

I have a firewire/USB combo card for my PPC 7500/100 upgraded to 300MHz, running OS 9.1 and I need a CD burner- So far, what I've found requires that the firewire port be ON the Motherboard. How crucial is this? Also must have 350MHz to run it, the 52x that is- LaCie, and LiteOn, good stuff? WHERE can I find an external firewire (or USB1.1) CD burner? It doesn't have to be super fast like 52x etc. I'd be happy with 8x or above- Mac ResQ doesn't have anything- Not finding what I need at DealMac, MacWarehouse, MacZone, ClubMac, etc- Thanks, DaveC. Click to expand.Look for an IOMega 'Predator'. I'm running a 7500 G4@350, with a generic (I think Belkin actually made it) dual-port USB 1.1 card. The Predator is rated for 48X.

Claims to be USB 2.0 only (Baloney! Works fine on my USB 1.1, just can't burn much more than about 4X without starting to get coasters) and Windows-only (More baloney, since it's working just peachy-keen for me under 9.1 (and before I upgraded, 8.6)) but DON'T believe the claims! Only caveat: Throw away the CD that comes with it - the one containing IOMega's 'HotBurn' software. It isn't worth the plastic it's made out of.

Put Toast Titanium on the machine instead, and you're good to go. Dunno if it was a case of 'going out of production', or what, but the local Staples had 'em on clearance last year, for just a hair over 20 bucks - marked down from $149 and change.

I looked at the 'Windows Only'. I looked at the 'USB 2.0 Only'. I looked at the price tag again and went 'What the heck, it's only 20 bucks, and if it works.'

The rest, as they say, is history. I'm a happy camper with it. And some general-purpose advice for you: Unless you.LIKE. paying premium price for last year's technology, stay away from MacMall, MacWarehouse, DealMac, MacZone, ClubMac, and all the rest of those 'Mac-specific' outfits. I can't count the number of times I've gotten.EXACTLY THE SAME PRODUCT.

locally (in a town that's about as computer-savvy as a troop of baboons) for anywhere from 30-60% less money than what any of the self-proclaimed 'Mac specialists' would take for it.THE EXACT SAME ITEM., not just 'close enough' or 'comparable'. With USB and FireWire ports in the beast, there's no reason whatsoever to accept 'This only works on Windows' claims except in the rarest cases. FireWire is FireWire.

I don't care what the target machine originally was - Windows, Commodore, Apple II, Mac, or Cray - If it truly is 'USB' or 'FireWire', then there's no reason for it not to work on any machine you want to plug it into that has the right port. The only time this isn't true is when the device, whatever it is, has a closed architecture, and requires special drivers that nobody other than the people selling it can supply. Which is a case where I'll go someplace else and find 'close enough', since I don't swallow machine-specific hardware cheerfully. There's no excuse for it in today's computing environment.

Between SCSI, ATA/IDE, USB, and FireWire, and the fact that.ALL. of them are available via (relatively) cheap PCI cards, there is no acceptable reason that can be given to me by any maker for a device that works on Windows, or Linux, or pick-yer-poison, but not MacOS. That's the whole point of standards, people. The only 'reason' that exists isn't a reason at all: It's sheer laziness on the part of the people writing the drivers. I think it reads at 40x, which would make it a 24x10x40x in the vernacular, but I'm not positive on the read speed. Works like a charm and is readily available used or on closeout on eBay.

LaCie is also a good brand; don't know much about LiteOn. H.B. Elkins - Beattyville, KY hbelkins(at)mis.net 'There's no doubt he's the best race driver in the world.' -Dale Jarrett, on the late Dale Earnhardt Go Big Blue (Kentucky Wildcats)!

17, 2001, after the two of them competed in an International Race of Champions (IROC) race at Daytona International Speedway. Earnhardt had gotten hit by Eddie Cheever on the last lap and did a remarkable job of saving his race car and not wrecking, thus drawing Jarrett's praise.

The following day, Feb. 18, 2001, Earnhardt got killed in a wreck on the last lap of the Daytona 500. I always thought it was telling that one of Earnhardt's competitors made that comment the day before Earnhardt lost his life.

I was an Earnhardt fan, if anyone hadn't gathered that. H.B. Elkins - Beattyville, KY hbelkins(at)mis.net 'There's no doubt he's the best race driver in the world.' -Dale Jarrett, on the late Dale Earnhardt Go Big Blue (Kentucky Wildcats)!

Hello, I'm looking for a SCSI card that will support 68 pin SCSI drives (15K Cheetahs) on a Mac G4 Quicksilver running Mac OS 9 ONLY (Not Classic. I only installed OS 9 from the retail disc and am NOT using Mac OS X). I have Adaptec 2940UW and Adaptec 2940U2W cards which work on my Blue and White G3 with SCSI drives.

However those Adaptec cards do not work on the G4.at least you can't boot from a SCSI drive on them. I would like a card that may also work in OS X in case I change the purpose of the machine later as I have those original install discs. I have read of some folks using the ATTO UL4D with success in OS X, but wanted to know if anyone knows if it will work in OS 9.2.1 only or Classic. I called ATTO Tech and they weren't sure, and some old web pages I have read only mention OS X.

Hence, I'm unsure if it's compatible with OS9. I would appreciate any feedback from SCSI users. Also, if there are other cards that you think would work with my setup, please advise. Thanks, Jeff. ' I have Adaptec 2940UW and Adaptec 2940U2W cards which work on my Blue and White G3 with SCSI drives.'

Are these SCSI cards the same ones that were in your G3? The Adaptec and are controller cards designed for use in PCs, whereas the made-for-Apple card is the. Bootable controller cards must be firmware-based and not driver-based, because they must be recognized, before a driver could be read from any connected hard drive. A card designed for use in PCs won't function in a Mac, because its ROM lacks the correct programming. An unsupported, installed 'PC' controller card may be recognized by the System Profiler, but that doesn't guarantee that the card will function. With a Mac-compatible controller card, you would be able to format the connected drive using Drive Setup, which is in the OS 9 Utilities Folder.

You might find it useful to download the 'PowerDomain 6.1.2' (pre-OS X) utility, that's designed for use with the Adaptec SCSI controller cards. Its 'PowerDomain Control' lets you select certain options on the card. Thanks to all for the helpful links. To Jeff, yes the Adaptec 2940UW and 2940U2W cards are the ones that worked fine in my Blue and White G3. I received the Power Domain software with the cards, but never needed to use it.

When looking into the G4 thing a few years ago, I was told that the ATTO cards were the only ones that would work with Powermac machines that were made to boot in OS X. I passed on it because it was $400 at the time. My humble tests seemed to confirm that.

Yet, if it's firmware based and not OS-based as you mention, I'm not sure if I know how to tweak that. I was hoping to hear that someone had a card name that they have used with a machine identical to mine with proven success. I've done several hours of research, but may need to continue at it, or call ATTO and hope for a different tech. Regards, Jeff. Apple Footer.
